Decoupage is a popular crafting technique that can be used to create a variety of beautiful and unique projects. But, it can be tricky to get the hang of at first. In this post, I will share some tips and tricks for decoupaging with wrapping paper that will help you achieve great results every time. So, whether you are a novice crafter or an experienced DIYer, keep reading for some helpful advice!
MOST COMMONLY ASKED QUESTIONS:
Can gift wrap be used for decoupage?
Yes it can. All types – from the thin to the thicker types. Two things to note though:
- The thinner the paper, the more likely it is to wrinkle.
- Metallic or cellophane wrap aren’t great for decoupage, because while most decoupage mediums dries clear, you’d more than likely be able to see some serious brush strokes.
How do I smooth out wrinkles?
That is the big question! You can use a craft iron, plastic wrap, or a brayer. My preferred method is a brayer which I’ll show you in the video below!
Okay, let the fun begin! If you prefer watching a video, check out my youtube channel here!
STEP 1: PREP YOUR SURFACE BEFORE YOU DECOUPAGE WITH WRAPPING PAPER
Just make sure your surface is clean and free of any dust. You can use a tack cloth or just a clean brush to brush out any dust particles.

STEP 2: DETERMINE PAPER SIZE
Since my panel was one in which the paper had to fit inside, I used my fingernails to mark cutting lines.
STEP 3: CUT WRAPPING PAPER TO SIZE
I cut along the lines that I marked using my fingernails.
STEP 4: BRUSH ON ADHESIVE
I used a wallpaper adhesive. My paper was thick and this works much better than a typical decoupage medium.
STEP 5: BRUSH ADHESIVE ON BACK OF WRAPPING PAPER
I used the same wallpaper adhesive to brush on the back side of the paper. This also helps to “uncurl” the paper making it easier to handle.
STEP 6: CAREFULLY LAY WRAPPING PAPER DOWN ONTO SURFACE
This is probably the trickiest step. Start at one end and get your corners placed first, and then slowly lay the paper down a little at a time. across the top, smoothing it out with your hand to make sure there are no air bubbles (a brayer works well too).
STEP 7: SMOOTH OUT WRINKLES
There are several methods for smoothing out wrinkles, but my favorite is to use a brayer! I just slowly roll the brayer around which will push out any excess adhesive. Just wipe with a cloth to remove the excess.
STEP 8: CUT AWAY EXCESS PAPER
STEP 9: SEAL THE DECOUPAGED WRAPPING PAPER
Once it’s completely dry, seal the decoupaged paper using a water-based sealer. My favorite sealer is Paint Couture top coat in satin! It dries crystal clear and self levels, which means you don’t have to overwork it for a smooth finish! I used a paint brush to apply it to the top of my paper!
So what do you think of my new piece of art created with decoupaged wrapping paper? I personally love how it turned out and the sweet birds will make a colorful addition to any room!
