How to Cover A Lampshade With Paper
Cover a lampshade with paper — but not in the usual way. That was my goal when I started this project. I wanted to transform a simple, white lamp shade into something fun and unique using decorative paper. However, I didn’t want to use the typical decoupage technique. I wanted something different, but after searching for inspiration, I couldn’t find any examples that felt right. Then, I remembered a DIY “pleated” lampshade technique that’s often used with fabric and wondered, “What if I tried this with paper instead?” Armed with an idea and gorgeous paper, I set out to create a masterpiece. Little did I know, this project would not only redefine my lamp but also teach me the joys of turning an ordinary object into something extraordinary.

Materials Needed To Cover A Lampshade With Paper
- A plain fabric lamp shade
- White paint (I used Paint Couture’s Farmhouse Linen)
- Decorative paper (I used Foil Birds paper from Mint by Michelle)
- Tite Bond Quick and Thick glue
- Artist brushes
- A ruler
- Scissors
Steps To Cover A Lampshade With Paper
Step 1: Prep Lampshade
Start by giving your fabric lamp shade a coat of white paint. This creates a clean and neutral base for your decorative paper. Let the paint dry completely before moving on to the next step.

Step 2: Cut Paper Strips For A DIY Pleated Lampshade
Lay out your decorative paper. For this project, I decided to cut the paper into strips that were 3¼ inches wide. Fold each strip in half lengthwise so that the width becomes approximately 1½ inches. This folding step ensures a neat, pleated look when applied to the shade.
Tip: Measure the height of your lamp shade and cut the strips to match that length. This will save you from trimming excess paper later.
Step 3: Cover Lampshade With Paper
Using Tite Bond Quick and Thick glue, begin attaching the paper strips to the lamp shade. Start at the seam of the shade. Here’s how:
- Apply a thin line of glue along the top edge of the lamp shade using an artist brush.
- Take a folded paper strip and align the fold with the top edge of the lamp shade. The raw edge should be on the right side and will be covered by the next strip.
- Press the strip onto the glue and secure it in place.
- Apply glue to inside of strip and press paper together, glueing strip closed.
Repeat this process, overlapping each strip slightly (about ½ inch) as you go around the shade.
Tip: If your paper strips are longer than the lamp shade, trim the excess after attaching all the strips.
Step 4: Create a Trim Band For Paper Lampshade
For a polished look, add a trim band at the bottom of the lamp shade. Here’s how:
- Cut a 2-inch-wide strip of the decorative paper.
- Fold the raw edges inward by ½ inch, then fold the entire strip in half lengthwise. This creates a band that is ½ inch wide.
- Open the band and apply glue to the entire inside surface.
- Starting at the seam of the shade, attach the band to the bottom edge of the lamp shade. Work in small sections (about 2 inches at a time) to ensure it’s even and smooth.
- When you reach the end, trim any excess paper and fold under the final edge for a clean finish.
Step 5: Finishing Touches on DIY Paper Lampshade
After the trim is secured, check the entire lamp shade for any loose edges and add glue where needed. Allow the glue to dry completely before using your revamped lamp shade.
