Let’s Get Crafty: Your Step-by-Step Guide to Decoupage Book Covers
Step 1 – **Prep Those Books Like a Pro: The First Step in Decoupage Book Cover Crafts**
– Start by giving the books a fresh coat of white paint, like DIY’s Vintage Linen, to create a clean canvas for the decoupage paper. Using white paint ensures that the colors and patterns on the paper will shine through without any interference.
– Apply thin, even coats and let each layer dry before adding another. Usually, two coats will do the trick. You can speed up the drying process by using a hair dryer or heat gun.
Tip: You’ll want to paint the inside book covers as well. Why the inside covers, you ask? It prevents warping, keeping your books nice and flat. Genius, right?
Step 2 – **Paper, Paper, Paper – The Fun Part of How to Use Decoupage Papers!**
-With a large sheet of decoupage paper, like Mint by Michelle papers, first lay your book covers onto the paper to cut the desired size. Be strategic when cutting to ensure the images you want end up on the book covers. Allow about half an inch of extra paper on all sides when possible; We’ll clean ’em up later.
Step 3 – **Stick It Good – Mastering the Decoupage Technique**
– Brush an even layer of decoupage medium onto your outside book covers. Don’t skimp, but don’t flood it either. I usually do one side of the book, plus the spine, at a time so I can allow it to dry lying down.

– Carefully lay your paper down, being conscious of your image placement, and slowly smooth it down as you go. This is where patience pays off, my friends.

– Now, grab your plastic wrap and brayer and smooth out those bubbles like you’re giving your book a spa treatment. Lay the plastic wrap down on the book cover and working from the center outwards, gently roll the brayer over the entire cover. After removing the plastic wrap, I like to brush on another coat of decoupage medium because much of it comes off onto the plastic wrap.
Note: If you don’t have a brayer, just ball up your plastic wrap and tap it up and down on the books to remove wrinkles.
– Let book covers dry completely.
Step 4 – **Edge-ucate Your Books – The Finishing Touch in Decoupage Book Covers**
– Once everything’s bone dry, it’s time to clean up those edges.
– Use your 220 grit sanding block and gently – I repeat, gently – sand off the excess paper. Sand in a downward direction (away from the book cover) for a clean finish. If you sand upward or across you run the risk of lifting your paper off the book cover.

Step 5 – **Seal the Deal – Protect Your Decoupage Masterpiece**
– You’re on the home stretch. Grab your clear top coat (I’m obsessed with Big Top for its perfect satin finish).
– Apply thin, even coats with a foam brush.

– Don’t forget the edges and any nooks where your decorative elements meet the paper. These are prime spots for wear and tear.
– Let each coat dry completely before adding another. I usually do 2-3 coats for maximum protection.
Step 6 – **Get Fancy – Let Your Creativity Shine with Decoupage Projects**
– This is where the magic happens! Consider adding a decorative mould, like a keyhole to the top book for a charming touch. I used an iflex wood keyhole but I usually go with silicone moulds and air dry clay.
New to Moulds? Easily enhances any project! See how below!
– For an antique look, paint the lock mould casting with gold metallic paint (Paint Couture’s Pale Gold is *chef’s kiss*), then brush on some black glaze (like Paint Couture’s Zinc). Wipe most of it off, leaving it in the crevices for that aged effect.
– Next, play with stamps and ink. Layer different designs for depth. Don’t worry about perfection – a slightly worn look adds character.
– Try adding some script or postmark stamps for that vintage vibe. Remember, less is often more, so step back and look at your work often.

Step 7 – **Show It Off – The Grand Finale of Your Book Cover Crafts**
– Now’s the time to play around with display options. Stack ’em, spread ’em out, mix them with other decor items.
– Try different arrangements – sometimes a ‘messy’ stack looks more natural than perfectly aligned books.
– If you’re feeling extra crafty, consider adding a ribbon around a stack or incorporating it into a larger vignette with candles or small plants.
