STEP BY STEP GUIDE TO CHALK PAINTING PUMPKINS BOUTIQUE STYLE

STEP ONE: CHOOSE AT LEAST TWO PAINT COLORS TO BLEND

Let’s start by talking about paint blending. This technique is all about mixing colors to create unique and interesting dimension. You can use chalk paints, metallic paints, or even regular acrylic paints when blending; However, it’s important to choose colors that will play (or blend) well together. For this project, I will be using chalk paints in just two colors: tan and white. Experiment with different colors and see how they can enhance the overall aesthetic of your pumpkin.

Tip: A white paint, used with any color, works well when blending. I wanted to mimic the look of the pumpkin on the acrylic block in the above photo. You can find that project Here.

STEP TWO: PAINT BASE LAYER ON PUMPKIN

Now that you’ve decided on your paint colors, you will paint a base coat on the pumpkin. Paint the pumpkin white all over and then add the tan color on the inside folds. Go back over the white areas, adding more white paint, and lightly pull in some of the tan color. You want to keep the paint slightly wet when blending, so lightly spritz with your water mister. Don’t worry about blending it perfectly here. You just want to get a good base layer on.

    STEP THREE: PAINT SECOND COAT

Now that your first layer of blended paint is dry, repeat the process. Remember, the water mister is your friend here! Keep adding the different colors of paint until you’re satisfied with the look. To soften any harsh lines take a dry, soft paint brush, and gently brush over the paint lines. Allow to dry or use a heat gun.

STEP FOUR: CREATE DIMENSION ON PUMPKIN USING A SILICONE MOULD

Now, let’s add some texture and dimension to our pumpkins. One way to do this is by using IOD decor moulds and Air dry clay. This technique allows you to create intricate patterns and designs on the surface of your pumpkin. Simply press the clay into the mold, pop it out, and glue it on. Once it’s dry, you can paint over it and watch as your pumpkin comes to life. There are so many moulds to choose from, so whatever your pumpkin aesthetic is, there’s sure to be something you’ll love! I chose the Grapes mould only for the leaves. This is a great Leaves Mould also!

Tip: Brush a little corn starch into your mould for easier release.

STEP FIVE: AFTER CHALK PAINTING PUMPKINS, PAINT THE MOULD CASTINGS AND STEM

Now let’s paint your mould casting using the same paint blending technique. We’ll use the green paint, white paint, and a tiny bit of the brown paint. Start with the green paint and brush on a small amount of white paint, while the green paint is still wet. Remember, keeping the paint wet is what enables the colors to blend. Just as we paint blended the pumpkin, keep adding colors until you get it like you like it.

Don’t forget to paint the stem. I didn’t have a dark brown on hand, so I mixed Weathered Wood with some of the Sandy Blonde.

STEP SIX: ADD SHIMMER AFTER CHALK PAINTING PUMPKINS (not interested in shimmer? Go to Step 7)

Okay, so your pumpkin should be totally chalk painted and looking fabulous. If you love how your masterpiece looks at this point, move to Step 7 and seal it to keep it beautiful for a long time.

But what’s a masterpiece without a touch of shimmer? Enter Sheer Bliss metallic paint. This magical paint adds a subtle sparkle to your pumpkin, giving it that extra wow factor. Apply the paint in light, thin coats for a seamless finish. And remember, patience is key – let the paint dry fully to reveal its true sparkle. Trust me, it’ll be worth the wait!

STEP SEVEN: SEAL AFTER CHALK PAINTING PUMPKINS

If you’re opting out of the shimmer finish, I understand. But you need to seal chalk paints. You can use a clear wax or a clear polycrylic. Either method is great, it just depends on the look you’re going for.
