How to Make Coasters Using Wood

Step 1: Preparing Your Wooden DIY Coasters

Before you start decorating, it’s important to prep DIY coasters for painting. Begin by using a sanding block to smooth the surface of your wooden coasters. This ensures the paint adheres better and gives your homemade coasters a clean, polished finish. Sanding is an easy and quick way to ensure your coasters are ready for painting.

Once the coasters are sanded, remove all dust and apply your base color. I used a white DIY chalk paint called Bead Board. DIY paint dries quickly and is great for blending. Apply one coat of white paint and let it dry completely. This step is key to creating a clean backdrop for your DIY coaster designs. You can also speed up the drying process with a heat gun or hairdryer if you’re in a hurry.

Step 2: Making Coasters Unique with Color

Now it’s time to add some color! I chose a lovely bright blue chalk paint called Blue Iris, which gives these DIY coasters a beautiful, chinoiserie effect. This paint works well for this look because it reactivates with water, making it easy to blend and create custom shades.

To achieve this effect, I use two brushes—one for white paint and another for the blue. Spritz the coaster lightly with a fine mist spray bottle to help blend the colors. This step adds depth to your creative coaster designs and makes each one unique.

Step 3: Stamping Your DIY Coaster Designs

This is where the fun really begins! Stamping allows you to personalize your DIY coaster ideas with intricate designs. I used Iron Orchid Design’s Rose Toile stamp set, which comes with rose designs, small script, and even a dragonfly. It’s perfect for creating custom coasters handmade with vintage charm. If flowers aren’t your vibe, check out all these other stamps you can choose from. The possibililites are endless!

To stamp the coasters, pour out a portion of the blue paint, roll your brayer through the paint and then roll onto the stamp. Carefully position the stamp on the coaster and press it down without shifting to avoid smudging. If you’re wondering how to make coasters that are professional-looking, the secret is in the stamping process. Don’t be afraid to play around with different stamp combinations to create a variety of easy to make coasters.

Step 4: Customizing DIY Coasters

The best part about making coasters is that you can customize each one. For one coaster, I stamped a large rose design, while on another, I added small script and a small section of the rose. This allows you to create a cohesive set while still giving each coaster its own unique flair. Feel free to experiment with different layouts to create truly creative coaster designs.

Don’t worry if you make a mistake while stamping! Chalk paint is very forgiving. If you smudge the design or don’t like how it turned out, simply paint over the mistake with your base color, let it dry, and try again.

Step 5: How to Seal DIY Coasters

Knowing how to make DIY coasters waterproof is important to ensure your handmade coasters last and are durable enough to use. I recommend coating them with epoxy resin. This will give your DIY coasters a beautiful, glossy finish and protect the paint from wear and tear. Resin also adds a professional touch, making your easy DIY coasters look like boutique-quality items.

After your stamped design has dried, pour a thin layer of epoxy resin over each coaster, making sure it spreads evenly. Mix the resin and let it cure according to the instructions. Once cured, your handmade coasters are not only ready for display but also functional as they’ll be able to withstand moisture.

Step 6: The Grand Finale – Going for Gold!

One final step to making coasters Ah-Mazing is to edge with gold metallic paint! You can do this before or after pouring epoxy resin. Just use a little popsicle stick or even your finger to rub the gold around the edges and even on the sides if you want. You can never have too much gold in my opinion!

A Few Extra Tips for Do It Yourself Coasters with Stamps

If you’re worried about making mistakes while stamping, remember that it’s all part of the process. Chalk paint allows you to fix errors easily, so don’t be afraid to experiment. You can always repaint and start again if you’re not happy with a design. This makes these easy coasters to make perfect for beginners or anyone looking to improve their crafting skills.

Also, keep a bowl of soapy water nearby to clean your stamps between uses. This will prevent paint from building up on the stamps and ensure your designs remain crisp and clear.
