What is Decoupage Art?
Decoupage arts involve decorating objects by adhering paper cutouts onto a surface, followed by sealing them with layers of varnish or decoupage glue (Mod Podge). I love how this versatile craft can transform everyday items like furniture, trays, and canvases into personalized pieces of art. The process allows for endless creativity, as you can use a variety of paper materials, such as printables, wrapping paper, or specialty decoupage papers, to create unique and beautiful designs. Now to take it a step further, which has become quite popular in the craft world, you can embellish your decoupage art with other elements and coat it with epoxy resin. The resin holds the elements in place and gives the decoupage art a glossy, glass-like finish. Whether you’re a beginner or an experienced resin crafter, decoupage art is an easy and rewarding way to add a personal touch to your home decor.
How to DIY Decoupage Canvas Art
Step 1 – Decide on Design for your Decoupage Canvas Art
Begin by cutting out individual elements from your decoupage paper, magazine, or wrapping paper. The paper I used features beautiful pumpkins and leaves, making it perfect for an autumn-themed project. Select the colors and sizes that best suit your vision. For my canvas, I chose a blue pumpkin and various leaves to create a cohesive design.
Tip: Wrapping paper is another favorite decoupage element and can work well on canvas too! Learn “How to Decoupage with Wrapping Paper to Create Beautiful Art.”
Note: Many decoupage papers already have a complete design. If that’s the case, then just cut the paper to fit your canvas or board.
Step 2 – Paint The Canvas
Prepare your canvas by applying a base layer of white paint. I brushed the entire canvas with DIY paint in the color “Bead Board”. I then edged the canvas with a blue DIY paint called “Hey Sailor.” Using a small wooden tool or popsicle stick , lightly rub the paint along the edges and surface of the canvas. This technique adds a subtle, interesting background that complements the decoupage elements.
Note: Since I was going to be using epoxy resin, I used a canvas designed for Paint Pours which is more sturdy than a regular canvas.
Step 3 – Add Decoupage Glue to the Canvas and Backs of Paper Pieces
Next, apply a layer of your decoupage glue to the back of the pumpkin paper and also the canvas. Place the paper elements onto the canvas where desired, smoothing them out gently. To remove any wrinkles, lay a piece of plastic wrap over the decoupage papers and use a brayer to smooth them out. I love this technique! It ensures a seamless finish.

Step 4 – Adding Glass to Decoupage Projects (Optional but so worth it!)
For a touch of sparkle, I love to add glass chips to my decoupage projects. I randomly placed the blue chips on the pumpkin and the champagne-colored chips along the stem. The reflective quality of these glass chips enhances the overall appearance, making the project shimmer beautifully in the light.
Step 5 – Mix and Pour Resin over Decoupage Canvas (Optional if not using glass)
Again, if you’re not embellishing with glass, you can simply brush another layer of decoupage medium over your entire design and allow to dry. Mix the epoxy resin according to the manufacturer’s instructions, ensuring an even blend of the two parts. Drizzle the resin over the glass chips first, then spread it over the entire canvas. Resin self-levels, so it’s crucial to work on a level surface to prevent uneven curing. Use painter’s tape along the bottom of the canvas which will allow for easy removal of resin drips.

A quick reminder when decoupaging canvas wall art:
When attempting any DIY project, please take care to undertake the necessary safety precautions. You should always follow the manufacturer’s safety recommendations when using any product or tool, especially epoxy resin. When following my instructions for a DIY project, you are doing so at your own risk.
Step 6 – Pop Bubbles That Form in Resin
Once the resin is applied, use a heat tool or small torch to pop any bubbles that appear on the surface. I usually will check my resin for bubbles 3-4 times during a 15-20 minute span. Allow the resin to cure for 24 hours without disturbance. During this time, periodically check and remove any excess resin to prevent drips from hardening.
If you’ve used epoxy resin while creating, you know how frustrating the bubbles can be. There are many ways to prevent them. Grab my free guide below on How to Get Bubbles Out of Resin:
Step 7 – Admire Your DIY Canvas Art
Well that was such a fun project! After the resin has cured, you’ll have a stunning piece of wall art with a glossy, glass-like finish. I love how the combination of decoupage and glass chips adds depth and interest, making this project a standout in any room. Hang your finished canvas where it can catch the light, highlighting the reflective quality of the glass chips.

Q & A
Here are a few Questions and Answers related to decoupaging a canvas that might be helpful:
Question 1 – Can you put Mod Podge on a canvas?
A – Yes! Mod Podge is a decoupage glue and works perfectly on canvas. There are several products that double as a decoupage glue, such as topcoats, varnish, and DIY Liquid Patina which I used for this project.
Question 2 – How to transfer napkin to canvas?
A – To transfer a napkin to canvas, simply separate the napkin plies (there are usually 3) and decoupage the image on the canvas using Steps 1-3 above. A napkin is thinner and more delicate than a decoupage paper so handle it gently.
Questions 3 – How to Mod Podge paper to canvas without bubbles?
A – There are a couple of ways I like to eliminate bubbles or wrinkles in my decoupage projects. The first way is to use plastic wrap and a brayer like explained in Step 3 above. Another wrinkle removing technique is using a craft iron. After brushing the decoupage glue over your paper elements, let it dry. Brush on another coat and let that dry. Next, you will lay parchment paper over your decoupaged design and rub over it with a heated craft iron.
Conclusion
