HOW TO COLOR RESIN

How to Color  Resin with Pigment Powders

If you’re an artist or DIYer, then you’ve probably heard of Amazing Casting Resin.  Amazing Casting Resin is a white urethane resin used mainly to create jewelry, mould castings, or figurines with perfect intricate details.   It contains two parts, A & B. Equal parts of the resin and hardener are mixed together and then poured into moulds.  Once cured, It has an opaque, rather than a clear finish. It cures rather quickly, so adding color before pouring is a bit tricky! What works really well for me is brushing the silicone mould with the pigment first, and then pouring the resin!  In this blog post, we’ll take an easier approach at how to color Amazing casting resin using Pigment Powders.

WHAT ARE PIGMENT POWDERS AND WHAT DO THEY DO?

Pigment powders are dry colourants used in a variety of DIY projects . One of my favorites is  DIY Making powders!  They have a wide range of beautiful colors, so finding the best pigment powder for your project is easy.  They are also very concentrated, so only a small amount is needed to achieve the desired color.  Another option is to mix the different colors which gives a unique blended look.  Your projects will have vivid and long-lasting color when created using DIY Making Powders.  It’s also important to note that pigment powders sometimes stain surfaces, so be sure to protect your work area before starting your project.

USING PIGMENT POWDERS AND RESIN  IN SILICONE MOULDS

Silicone moulds are the perfect tool to help add color to Amazing casting resin. Simply add your desired pigment powder to the silicone mould, and then pour in the liquid resin mixture. The resultant casting will be vividly colored. You can even mix and match different colors to create interesting effects. If you’re looking for an easy way to add some pizzazz to your projects, coloring silicone molds with pigment powders is the way to go.  With a little creativity, the possibilities are endless when it comes to DIY projects made with pigment powders and resin. The best powders for any resin are those that have a fine particle size and are well-pigmented.  I love using  DIY Making Powders. These powders add beautiful color to your resin projects without affecting the curing process.

WHAT ARE SILICONE MOULDS?

Silicone moulds are widely used for casting resin. They are made from silicone rubber, come in a variety of shapes and sizes, and  are relatively easy to use.  It is flexible, which means you can easily remove the casting from the mould without tearing it. In addition, silicone is non-toxic and does not absorb color, meaning that it is safe to use for food moulds.

Iron Orchid Designs (IOD) moulds are the most popular among crafters and foodies alike.  They are made of high quality, food safe silicone,  with a level of detail not seen in any other moulds on the market.  Plus, the patent-pending micro rim, found only on IOD moulds, ensures a crisp clean edge on your castings.

Check out this video where I  brushed the pigment powders into several IOD moulds and then poured Casting resin on top! This actually has become my favorite method for creating castings.

ADDITIONAL PRODUCTS THAT CAN ENHANCE CASTING RESIN

Did you notice how shiny and shimmery my castings turned out? After I popped my castings out of the molds, I added a metallic paint called Sheer Bliss by Paint Couture! Sheer Bliss is one of my favorite products! It gives surfaces a beautiful shimmer!  To even go further and add sparkle, I often use German Glass Glitter in Sheer Frost.  German Glass Glitter is very fine glass particles that sparkles like glitter! It can really take your projects to another level and it comes in several colors.

Added Sheer Bliss for shimmer.
